Cardigan Mountain School

Cardigan Mountain School offers a close-knit community that prepares middle school boys—in mind, body, and spirit—for responsible and meaningful lives in a global society. We reward effort and accomplishment, helping each boy realize his academic, physical, and personal potential through daily reflection on and practice of our four Core Values—Compassion, Integrity, Respect, and Courage.

At Cardigan Mountain School, we know middle school boys. Our forward-thinking program is informed by the school’s rich history and traditions. Established in 1945, our founders imagined a school that offered a beautiful natural setting and balanced instruction, helping boys build a foundation for future success. Expanding from an initial graduating class of seven boys and merging with the Clark School in 1954, Cardigan has settled intentionally into our current enrollment of  225 boys in grades six through nine.

With more than six decades of experience in educating middle school boys, we know a lot about creating an atmosphere where boys feel motivated to do their best. Our caring teachers make it a priority to understand each student as an individual and as a learner, and our curriculum progressions are informed by the latest research on adolescent brain development and learning styles. Skill-building is a key part of our academic program, while our small classes emphasize hands-on learning and problem-solving, developing students’ ability to learn from mistakes and persevere through adversity. Our ultimate goal is to prompt boys toward self-knowledge, so that they understand themselves as learners and can pursue strategies that help them to become more successful students and versatile people.
